Last week, Apple introduced new Mac Studio and MacBook Air with a significant performance boost. It was expected that the company would announce the M4 Ultra chip for Mac Studio, but instead, the M3 Ultra, Apple’s most powerful processor to date, was unveiled. The first performance tests show a significant increase in graphics power in the Metal benchmark, especially compared to the M4 Max and M2 Ultra.
According to Geekbench 6, a Mac Studio based on the M3 Ultra chip with 80 GPU cores scored 259,668 points in the Metal test, which is significantly higher than the M2 Ultra with 76-core GPU – 222,582 points. This means that the graphics performance of the M3 Ultra is 16% higher than its predecessor. So, these results confirm that this is the fastest Apple chip to date.

Compared to the 16-inch MacBook Pro on the M4 Max chip with 40-core GPU, which scored 187,460 points, the new M3 Ultra demonstrates 38% better performance.
It is worth noting that some of the M3 Ultra performance tests that have appeared on the web may be erroneous, as they do not match Apple’s stated specifications.
The M3 Ultra is manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process technology, just like other Apple chips. However, this processor uses UltraFusion technology, which combines two M3 Max chips into a single system. According to the latest rumors, Apple may abandon UltraFusion in the future, which means that the M4 Ultra may never appear.
CPU testing in the M3 Ultra showed a performance increase of about 10% compared to the M4 Max and +29% compared to the M2 Ultra.
As a reminder, last week Apple also introducediPad Air with M3 chip and iPad 11th generation tablet with double the storage capacity.
