40 years after the release of the first «Tron», Disney’s sci-fi film series returned with a threequel starring Jared Leto.
Leto is the Ares that appears as a prefix in the movie’s title — and is one of the programs from the digital universe that is tasked with entering the real one. The trailer offers a first look at humanity’s contact with artificial intelligence.
«As a child, I was obsessed with “Tron”», — claimed Summer at CinemaCon. «It felt like the future was just around the corner. It had everything I wanted from a movie — action, adventure, and it took me to a world I had never known. The new movie will impress you too».
The rest of the cast includes — Evan Peters («X-Men», «Deadpool 2»), Greta Lee («Spider-Man: Across the Universe»), Gillian Anderson (TV series «Sex Education», «Top Secret»), Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, Hassan Minhaj and Arturo Castro.
It is noteworthy that Peters plays Julian Dillinger, who shares the same surname as the first film’s villain Ed Dillinger, played by David Warner, while Jeff Bridges reprises the role of Kevin Flynn in the threequel.
The film is directed by Joachim Renning («Kon-Tiki») and written by Jack Thorne — the same man who wrote the recent the hit miniseries «Youth» for Netflix.
«Tron: Ares» will debut in cinemas on October 10.
The original 1982 film told the story of software engineer Kevin Flynn, who, after hacking into the mainframe of the technology company he once worked for, suddenly finds himself in the digital world and encountering the programs he helped develop. The film, directed by Steven Lisberger, was nominated for a «Oscar» and became a milestone for the use of digital effects and computer-generated imagery in cinema, but it took 28 years for its sequel to be released (a record break in Hollywood history). A sequel called «Tron: Tron Legacy» was released in 2010, directed by Joseph Kosinski, and told the story of Flynn’s son trying to find his father, and grossed $409 million at the box office.
