Director Danny Boyle has confirmed that Cillian Murphy will be cast in the next two films of the «28 Years Later trilogy, although the release of the third film is still in doubt — as the team has not yet received the money for it.
«We finished the first movie, we shot the second one, but we don’t have the funding for the third one. Tom [CEO of Sony Pictures] seems like a nice guy, but he hasn’t given us any money, so please come to the theaters on June 20 and support the sequel to Apocalypse Now,» Boyle said during Sony’s presentation at CinemaCon (via World of Reel).
Obviously, Boyle’s words imply that the fate of the third movie will depend on how well the first two films do at the box office.
The first one, titled «28 Years Later», cost about $75 million and was directed by Boyle himself with his longtime «28 Days Later» colleague, screenwriter Alex Garland, while the second one is being directed by Nia Dacosta, which may cause some skepticism among fans. However, the second installment will have the advantage of the expected presence of Cillian Murphy, who is set to reprise his role as Jim from the 2002 film.
«28 years later», which filmed mostly on iPhone 15will tell the story of Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), his wife Ayla (Jodie Comer) and son Spike (Alfie Williams), who will be forced to leave their safe haven on the mainland, «discovering the secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but also the survivors».
The firstthe trailer of the movie, which was released in December, collected 60 million views per day —This is a record for 2024 and the second result for horror films in general. At the same time, the video only intensified speculation about Murphy’s appearance, in particular because of the zombie that closely resembled his character andwho, as it turned out, was played by British art dealer and model Angus Neill.
The cast and plot of Temple of Bones are still under wraps, but Dacosta said at CinemaCon that his script will be very different from the previous installment and thanked Garland and Boyle for giving her free rein in this one.
