The remake of «How to Train Your Dragon» has received an official release date and positive reactions from the first viewers. And with it, the announcement of the premiere of the second part.
In February, the trailer showed Toothless in flight, and Gerard Butler «real» Viking. And it didn’t take long for Universal Pictures to present the footage of the remake of the first film at a private screening. And judging by the reaction, the studio was right to switch to the live-action format.
The film fragments presented at CinemaCon received extremely positive reviews. Attendees called the remake «visually stunning», and critics praised it as «a great reimagining» of the iconic DreamWorks animated film. For example, Scott Menzel says that the project is a «emotionally engaging retelling of the animated classic».
«Director Dean DeBlois recreates the magic of the original with plenty of action, humor and heart. Mason Thames as Hickapoo is the definition of perfect casting, as is most of this cast… This is a must-see on the big screen and this reminder of why audiences love going to the movies will be a huge hit», — writes the movie reviewer Scott Menzel in X.
An equally positive opinion was expressed by a journalist, Daniel Baptista. According to him, the movie can become a fascinating story for a whole new generation.
«A magnificent reimagining of one of the most beloved animated films of all time. Full of heart, it takes everything that made the original so special and takes it to new heights with breathtaking imagery and a compelling story for a whole new generation», — he writes.
The remake of «How to Train Your Dragon will be released in theaters in June 2025. The studio is clearly confident in the success of the project and is probably preparing a full restart of the entire trilogy. Universal has now announced «How to Train Your Dragon 2», which will be directed again by Dean DeBlois, the author of the original animated trilogy and the first remake. The premiere is scheduled for June 11, 2027.

The plot of the second part is likely to repeat the events of the original «How to Train Your Dragon 2» — Hiccup finds his mother and, together with Toothless, defends his native island of Burke from a new threat. Given how warmly the press greeted the first remake, the sequel has every chance of becoming another Universal hit. However, everything will be decided by the box office in 2025.
