insider talks about turning the console into a PC, former CEO — about its cancellation

Microsoft’s Xbox game console seems to be on the verge of transformation. Various sources speak of at least a change in the format of its existence.

On Friday, March 7, former Xbox corporate vice president Peter Moore took part in Danny Pena’s podcast on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Xbox 360 console. The executive, who also had a distinguished career at SEGA and later at Electronic Arts before leaving the industry, emphasized the radically different state of the gaming market today and expressed doubt about the existence of the Xbox hardware console in the future.

Peter Moore stated that Microsoft would not produce consoles if it had a choice. In its ideal world, Microsoft would abandon the hardware and would focus on the supply of games on all possible types of devices.

«Look, if they had a choice, would they manufacture equipment? No. They would be thrilled if they could become a multi-hundred billion dollar organization that would deliver content directly to your TV, to whatever monitor you would choose to play it on, in the classic Netflix model, if you will. You just pick and choose who plays it? 5000 people play it? I’m turning on right now, no delay, you’re ready. There doesn’t have to be a box between you, your controller, and your TV. Activision’s acquisition of Blizzard has changed things, I think – not I think, I know – at Microsoft. It’s not the old days of console wars and trying to steal customers, gain market share and increase adoption. This is something more in an economic sense».

On March 10, on the Xbox Two podcast, Jez Corden, a highly experienced insider, announced a radical change in Xbox hardware. According to him, instead of creating a full-fledged console that would be released in 2027, Microsoft will create a PC with a shell, TV-friendlythat will adhere to a certain set of specifications.

«Developers will create for a Windows computer, but they will know exactly what the specifications will be and will be able to optimize [games] for it. … I’m pretty sure that the new hardware won’t come out in 2026. It will be 2027».

Corden explained the rumors about Call of Duty 2026 (allegedly for the new Xbox). He says that the talk about devkit is more about what specifications developers have received for the next Xbox (whatever it may be). anyway, the awareness or partial data about big upcoming changes is in the air and makes experts talk about them.
