Have you forgotten about Marathon? Bungie, the studio that created Destiny, has shown a hint of its upcoming game.
The developers published a cryptic post on their official account. However, the tweet leaves more questions than answers — what exactly is Bungie trying to say? The teaser showed strange images and distorted signal noise.
Fans began to solve this puzzle and noticed that the ASCII-style image repeats scenes from the first Marathon trailer. It also contains phrases such as «Tau Chi’s whispers», «the screams of those who have been silenced», and «the evidence of their crimes». In general, Bungie is once again playing its favorite puzzles, Easter eggs, and encrypted messages.

Another interesting thing: fans have noticed that the published image looks like maps from Marathon 1994. The same ones that can be found in the old guide on marathon.bungie.org.. Perhaps a coincidence, perhaps not.

For those who don’t know the hype: Marathon is a PvP shooter set on the planet Tau Kita 4. The story is based on cybernetic mercenaries called Runners, created to survive on this mysterious colony. The idea is interesting, but the development is long, as we saw the last major update back in the fall. Bungie then showed a raw version of the game, where the characters were still «coming together», and the enemies were at a very early stage.
Bungie announced the relaunch of Marathon in May 2023, shortly after Sony acquires the studio for $3.6 billion. The game was immediately presented as something atmospheric with elements of horror and psychological tension. But then it didn’t go well. In July 2024, the studio laid off 220 people, 17% of the entire team, and even earlier — 100 people. The media reported on the toxic atmosphere and complete disorganization.
Another Chris Barrett’s dismissal was a high-profile story — former director of Marathon. After an internal investigation, he was fired and sued Bungie and Sony for $200 million.
But it seems that despite the chaos inside the studio, the game was not buried. Marathon director Joe Ziegler, who took the helm of the project last year, was previously silent, but now he hints at something new. Does this mean that the announcement of full gameplay is not far off? It is far from certain. But we can state that Bungie is preparing something.
