Obsidian releases major update to Pillars of Eternity — better battles, quests, and dialog fixes

Obsidian has released a big update for the 10th anniversary of Pillars of Eternity — developers want to follow the example of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Although the developers recently released Avowed, sells mushrooms and are developing The Outer Worlds 2 — they haven’t forgotten about their previous games. Pillars of Eternity has received improved battles, quests, graphics, NPC interaction, and general fixes. This is not just a minor bug fix patch, but a major improvement that will make traveling through the world of Eora more comfortable.

The studio has fixed a long-standing loading issue where the game could open with a black screen for some language settings, including Turkish. Mac owners can now play without any problems — there were previously difficulties with downloading, and Steam Linux support is now available. Achievements in GOG are now displayed correctly, and all digital rewards, such as those for the Epic Games Store, are now being provided as they should be.

The update also improves graphics and sound, for example, fixing a bug that caused some NPCs to be silent or make strange sounds. Eder will finally start talking. Cutscenes in 4K have become smoother, T-pose cases in videos have been fixed, and characters will no longer suddenly stop talking during dialogues. Companion animals now have the correct sounds of their steps. Also, magic animation has been improved — the developers have updated spells to make them look cooler, especially for Delemgans, Adragan, Pwgra, and Menpwgra.

Earlier in Pillars of Eternity, players were experiencing bugs with rewards or completing quests. Some players could receive two copies of rare items, and this has now been fixed. In addition, in Mother’s Plea, events now play out correctly if a certain NPC dies before the mission starts. Also, if you already have the item you need for the quest, the NPC will still accept it, instead of forcing you to run for it again.

Obsidian has also fixed Shadow Step — the function no longer freezes and aims at the ground. The AI of allies wills no longer be unnecessarily stupid and will not attack enchanted comrades. Also fixed a bug that caused Abydon’s Hammer to give a constant increase in Strength.

Although a large-scale update has already been announced — Obsidian is already planning the next one in Pillars of Eternity. The following improvements will resemble Baldur’s Gate 3 or other turn-based games. In the future, the project will get a turn-based battle mode, as there is currently only a real-time «system with a» pause Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire had a similar mode in its timeand the inspiration for the changes could be Divinity: Original Sin 2 by Larian Studios (developers of Baldur’s Gate 3). It is not yet known when this mode will be released.

The developers are planning to start testing the turn-based game and collect feedback from players. Therefore, Avowed may soon become even more flexible in terms of combat mechanics.
