US’ battle-ready vehicles could dominate enemy in wars with new tech

A Virginia-based defense firm has introduced an advanced computing system that can reportedly bolster the power of country’s warfighter vehicles. The new system by Leonardo DRS can quickly deliver real-time threat detection, situational awareness, and advanced mission processing directly to military vehicles.

The high-performance Artificial Intelligence Processor (AIP) computing system is reportedly capable of operating in extreme environments.

Developed for high-speed processing, the system is engineered to process vast amounts of battlefield data, from advanced image sensors to sensor fusion systems.

AI can shape combat operations

The ruggedized AIP integrates with AI algorithms in current and future U.S. Army combat applications.

“With AIP, we are redefining how AI is deployed in combat operations,” said Denny Crumley, senior vice president & general manager at Leonardo DRS.

“This is not just about processing power—it’s about delivering decisive advantage in real-time, ensuring soldiers and commanders are able to make the right decisions when it matters most.”

Distinct advantage over similar products

The company claims that the AIP system provides a distinct advantage over similar products, while leveraging cutting-edge commercial technology.

The powerful and high-speed processing unit is developed around the company’s deep experience in building advanced and proven combat processing systems for the U.S. and allied militaries around the world.

Built on Leonardo DRS’ legacy of providing mission-critical tactical computing solutions for battle management, fires, and logistics applications, the powerful and high-speed processing unit is platform agnostic and compact.

AIP could boost military power

Leonardo DRS, which has a long legacy of pioneering A.I.-powered video and image processing, is now working with industry leaders and the U.S. government to refine AI’s role in modern warfare.

The company claims that its Artificial Intelligence Processor product line is the latest example of Leonardo DRS’ leadership in the military network computing, processing, and integration market.

It is a key strategic focus for the company as it continues to be the leading provider of advanced C5I technologies with the U.S. military and allied militaries around the world. These capabilities are enabling increased data and communications needed for situational awareness in multi-domain battlefield operations, according to a press release.

Leonardo DRS also revealed that it’s investing in the future of C5 for the Department of Defense through the development of the next generation Mounted Mission Command Systems, AI processing solutions and advanced C5ISR/EW Modular Open Suite of Standards/ Sensor Open System Architecture (CMOSS/SOSA) aligned mounted systems – all aimed at enabling future network and platform processing to improve sensor fusion, situational awareness, and reduce the cognitive burden for commanders and crews.

Recently, the company has also received a prototype project award by the U.S. Army to modernize the Paladin Electric Servo Amplifier (PESA) electric weapon control system for the M109A7 Paladin self-propelled howitzer. The OTA award is worth $16.9 million.

The PESA is a critical technology to the operation of the M109A7. Under the project award Leonardo DRS will develop a next-generation prototype with current electrical technology to improve the producibility and maintainability of the line replaceable units and enable the continued operation of the vehicle with no degradation to current capabilities.
